About Sumaya Mahomed

Sumaya is the director of utility innovation at Power for All, where she leads efforts to test and scale utility models that can accelerate the rate of energy access. She specializes in developing and implementing novel strategies that help distribution utilities adopt new technologies and improve the performance of their existing infrastructure. This includes Power for All's internationally recognized and award winning Utilities 2.0 campaign, and the City of Cape Town's results-based energy efficiency financing model. Sumaya spearheaded the Power for All's Utilities 2.0 campaign in Uganda, which won the prestigious 2023 Ashden Award for Integrated Energy in Africa. Her key role in promoting an integrated energy approach in Uganda's energy policy and isolated grid regulations, along with managing Cape Town's internationally recognized energy efficiency demand-side management initiative, exemplifies her expertise and impact.

She has managed and implemented renewable and energy efficiency projects for the Cape Town municipality and various consultancy-based projects across East and Southern Africa. Sumaya holds an MBA, a master's in sustainable development (cum laude), a bachelor's in chemical engineering, and a postgraduate diploma in engineering. In 2022, she was named sub-Saharan Africa Regional Energy Manager of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers.
